This collection consists of drafts and related correspondence for a three part, largely unpublished, work entitled "A Complete History of the Virginia Military Institute, 1839-1924." One part was eventually published as "VMI in the World War." Also included are miscellaneous VMI-related notes and papers.

Biographical / Historical

Joseph Reid Anderson, Jr. was born in 1851 in Richmond, Virginia. He graduated from VMI in 1871, and had a lifelong association with VMI as a faculty member, Alumni Association president, and official "historiographer." He also was an iron manufacturer and farmer at Lee, Goochland County, Virginia. Anderson died in 1930.
