This collection consists of 12 letters (dated 1859 to 1860) from Francis W. Smith and others to artist Alexander Galt. The letters concern Smith family portraits and a bust of Philip St. George Cocke, a member of the VMI Board of Visitors.

Biographical / Historical

Francis Williamson Smith was born in 1838 in Norfolk, Virginia. He graduated VMI in 1856. He went on to become an educator and a lieutenant colonel in the Confederate Artillery. Smith was wounded at Amelia Springs, Virginia and died on April 6, 1865.
