Papers, approximately 90 items, of Marshall McDonald. The papers include primarily incoming and some outgoing correspondence, 1861-1892; notes; scientific reports; and miscellaneous documents. Among the correspondents are several VMI alumni and faculty members, including Scott Shipp, Francis H. Smith, Edward Cunningham, Wilfred E. Cutshaw, John W. Lyell, James H. Morrison, Mark B. Hardin, and Daniel W. Flowerree; and several Civil War officers including Gen. Dabney H. Maury and Hunter McGuire. Topics include McDonald's service in the Engineer and Ordnance Depts., CSA; glimpses of wartime and postwar life at VMI (in the Smith and Shipp letters), and McDonald's professional concerns.

Marshall McDonald, b. 1835 Romney, West Virginia; VMI Class of 1860; Confederate Army engineer and ordnance officer stationed at the Selma, Alabama arsenal; VMI faculty member (Chemistry, Mineralogy and Geology), 1866-1872; first United States Commissioner of Fish; d. 1895.
