Papers, 1904-1912, of Julian Neville Major, VMI Class of 1907. The collection consists primarily of family correspondence, including letters written by Major to his family while he served as Professor of Mathematics and Engineering at St. John's University, a Protestant college in Shanghai, China; letters received from his mother during his VMI cadetship and years in China; correspondence from the Domestic and Foreign Missionary Society received prior to his departure for China; miscellaneous letters from colleagues. The collection also contains a photograph album documenting life at St. John's University (Shanghai, China) during the period 1908-1911; one book of handwritten notes concerning "religious instruction" used at St. John's misc. VMI grade reports.

Julian Neville Major, born 1887, Mitchell's Station, Culpeper County, Virginia; graduate, Virginia Military Class of 1907; Professor of Mathematics and Engineering at St. John's College, Shanghai, China, 1907-1911; upon his return to the United States he became President of the Old Virginia Packing Company in Front Royal, VA; died 1953, buried Front Royal.
