John W. Downer collection

The collection consists of a cased scrapbook presented to him on his 85th birthday in November 1966, containing biographical information, documents and photographs detailing his military career, including his service during World War I in France; one mounted photograph of Col. Downer; and Downer's presentation copy of the book "Report of the American Olympic Committee, Seventh Olympic Games, Antwerp, Belgium, 1920."

Biographical / Historical

Colonel John W. Downer (VMI Class of 1902), served in the United States Army from 1901-1943 and was with the American Expeditionary Force (commanding 1st and later 2nd Battalions, 6th Field Artillery) in France during World War I. He was also a member of the U.S. Riding Team at the Seventh Olympic Games in 1920 and served as an American representative on the U.S. Olympic Committee.
