McKay Family Civil War Letter

Scope and Contents One letter from Confederate soldier Philip B. McKay to his wife Mary Jane. The letter, dated 1862 June 2, was written from Baldwyn Mississippi. McKay describes fighting near Corinth, Mississippi; hardships of war; and effort to obtain a substitute so that he can return home.

Napoleon B. Brisbine Civil War Letters

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of two Civil War letters written by Brisbine to his brother and sister. The items are dated September 16 and 24, 1864. In the first letter, Brisbine describes being held prisoner in Winchester, Virginia, where he was captured while caring for Union wounded. In the second, he describes the recapture of Winchester by Union troops and the Confederate retreat.

Scope and Contents The Oliver M. Rutledge Papers consist primarily of incoming and outgoing correspondence of Virginia Military Institute Cadet Oliver M. Rutledge for the period 1879-1882. Included are letters received at from parents, siblings and friends. A few letters written by Rutledge contain references to cadet life in the 1880's. The letter of May 14, 1882 to his mother describes the mineral springs resort at Dagger's Springs, Virginia. Additional miscellaneous items include an 1882 VMI graduation...

R. Emmett Martin letter

Scope and Contents Civil War letter from Confederate soldier R. Emmett Martin to his wife, dated 3 July 1862. Letter is headed "Battlefield" and discusses Battle of Malvern Hill (Seven Days' Battle, Peninsular Campaign). Martin writes to "inform you of my safety after the hard fought battle of the lst inst." and disusses heavy casualties in his regiment.
