Horace P. Meader papers

Scope and Contents Two Civil War discharge documents issued to Private Horace P. Meader of the 24th Massachusetts Infantry, Company K., U.S. Army, dated 28 Dec. 1863 at St, Augustine, Florida and 20 Jan 1866 at Richmond, Virginia. Two documents, 1921 and 1928, concerning the Civil War pension given to Meader's widow. At the time of his enlistment, Meader was 23 years old, a teamster, living in Boston.

Jacob Kent Langhorne Civil War Papers

Scope and Contents

The papers consist of 17 Civil War letters (Sept 1862-May 1863) from Jacob Kent Langhorne to various members of his family, written during his Virginia Military Institute cadetship and his service in the Confederate Army with the 2nd Virginia Cavalry Regiment. Topics include cadet life, family matters, camp life.

James A. Harden Papers

Scope and Contents The bulk of the collection consists of letters written by James Harden to his sister, covering wartime events experienced by his unit as well as his time at Ft. Delaware. Also included is one letter written from VMI in June 1861 and miscellaneous items.

James H. Jameson Civil War letters

Scope and Contents The collection consists of two letters written in August 1864 by James H. Jameson to his daughter, Hallie. Both letters were composed while he was a Confederate prisoner of war at Point Lookout Prison. Jameson discusses his failing health and his need for food.

James M. Drake Civil War letter

Scope and Contents Civil War letter, addressed to his father, is dated August 26, 1862 and was written from Alexandria, Virginia, where the Regiment was encamped. Drake presents his views on slavery, discusses the beauty of the city, mentions inaccuracy of northern war news ("Don't you believe all your Northern papers say, the Union is in great danger of a complete defeat.") and discusses Union officers' view of Stonewall Jackson ("Most of our officers have a great fear of Jackson.")

James W. A. Ford letter

Scope and Contents One letter (September 20, 1863) from James W. A. Ford of Lewisburg WV to his cousin Caroline. He discusses the death from the effects of childbirth of his sister Lizzie Burdett. He also mentions that he has raised a company of cavalry.

John B. Snodgrass Civil War Letters

Scope and Contents Eight letters and one letter fragment from Cadet Snodgrass to his sister Kate. All dated 1862 and written from VMI. Primary topic is the war and its effect on his family; occasional references to VMI. Mentions that Corps of Cadets has been ordered to aid General Jackson (see April 19, May 1, May 18); says he is "anxious to get a shot at the enemy."

John Borders papers

Scope and Contents Four post-Civil War documents, 1866, granting a presidential pardon to former Confederate soldier John Borders of Calhoun, Co., Alabama. The certificates bear names of Secretary of State William Seward, and President Andrew Johnson.
