Charles E. Foster papers

Scope and Contents The collection consists of 5 items, including Phi Lambda Epsilon and Phi Delta Theta fraternity certificates (1920-1921); athletic award certificate from the Wentworth Military Academy (1921); an ROTC advanced cavalry camp certificate from Fort Meade, Maryland (1924); and Foster's name card dating from his VMI cadetship. Foster (b. 1903 d. 1938) was a member of the Virginia Military Institute Class of 1925.

Charles E. Lightfoot Civil War Letter

Scope and Contents The collection consists of a one page Civil War letter, dated 1865 March 17, from Headquarters, Artillery Defenses, Richmond, Virginia. The letter was written by Confederate officer Lt. Col. Charles E. Lightfoot to Colonel Benjamin S. Ewell, brother and staff officer to General Richard S. Ewell. Lightfoot asks for a clarification of command responsibility for Richmond's artillery defenses, stating that the present command situation places him in conflict with Lt. Col. Carter M. Braxton. Scope and Contents Collection (ca. 20 cf) of historic newspapers (individual issues), miscellaneous manuscripts& ephemera, compiled and indexed by Carson. The items cover numerous unrelated topics, although many of the newspapers date from the Civil War. The collection was presented to VMI as the "Carson Historical Papers" in 1941 as a memorial to Lt. Robert P. Carson, VMI Class of 1854.

Charles M. Figgat collection
