Plan for Arrangement and Grading of Buildings and Grounds, 1909-12-24

 Item
Scope and Contents Blueprint submitted by renowned landscape architect Warren H. Manning that proposed a dramatic expansion of the VMI Post and the relocation of many buildings. The blueprint also included a proposal for a broad tree-lined vista linking VMI and Washington and Lee University. A proposal submitted by architect Bertram Goodhue was ultimately selected, so Manning's plan was never used.

Scope and Contents Facilities planning report outlining future needs and projects; typically updated annually. Since 2004 these have been called Post Facilities Master Plan. The series also contains earlier similar documents, created intermittently. The oldest dates to 1959.

Scope and Contents In 2005, VMI was awarded a Campus Heritage Grant from the Getty Foundation in order to review and provide a strategy for protecting and preserving the historical architectural and landscape resources on Post. This is the final report of John Milner Associates, Inc., who worked with VMI to devise this plan.

Scope and Contents Files relating to various depression era building projects funded by the federal government - Public Works Administration (PWA). Buildings include: Mess Hall; Maury-Brooke; Swimming Pool; Barracks; Preston Library; Stables. Also includes William Couper's Construction Diaries for building of the Mess Hall, the Military Store and Barracks in 1936.
