Chester F. Burgess collection

Scope and Contents Chester F. Burgess was a Professor of English at the Virginia Military Institute from 1962-1988. The collection consists of edited manuscripts of three of his publications: The Letters of John Gay; The Beggar's Opera and Companion Pieces; and The Fellowship of the Craft.

John E. Townes Collection

Scope and Contents The collection consists of photograph albums, diplomas, and miscellaneous papers documenting the life of John Edward Townes. The photos depict both his VMI cadetship and his subsequent career in the U. S. Army Coast Artillery Corps (1908-1920) and at VMI as a faculty member (1921-1956). During World War I he served in France with the American Expeditionary Force (AEF).

Thomas M. Semmes manuscript

Scope and Contents Manuscript (holograph, 38 pages) of a speech given by VMI Modern Languages Professor Thomas M. Semmes. The speech, concerning Stonewall Jackson, was presented in Richmond circa 1892. Semmes, an 1860 VMI graduate, was a cadet during the time that Jackson was on the VMI faculty.
