Regulations of the Virginia Military Institute

Scope and Contents The Regulations detail rules for the operation of the Institute and for all aspects of cadet life. They were first published in 1839, and throughout the 19th through mid-20th centuries they were updated every few years. In the modern era, cadet regulations are published yearly and are familiarly know as the Blue Book.

The collection includes a copy of the 1839 Regulations signed by Joseph W. Bell, Class of 1842.
