Moncure Family Papers

Scope and Contents Miscellaneous letters and other documents to and from various members of the Moncure family, who have a long association with VMI. Included is an 1849 letter from Cadet Thomas J. Moncure (VMI Class of 1853) to his father, William A. Moncure, written while he was a fourth classman ("rat") at VMI. A complete inventory is located in the folder with the documents.

Notebook, 1849-1864

Scope and Contents The notebook contains approximately 50 poems by William E. Arnold, other cadets, various 19th century poets, and anonymous authors. Cadet poetry includes The Regulations by Charles Denby (VMI Class of 1850) and The Six Plebes on Leaving for Richmond by Thomas O. Benton (VMI Class of 1850). A few poems were composed by Arnold during the Civil War. The notebook also includes miscellany such as clippings, puzzles, and riddles.

Summer Camps Order Book, 1842 - 1846

Scope and Contents Contains orders issued during the annual summer encampment period, 1842-1846. During the pre-Civil War period and through much of the 19th century, cadets moved out of Barracks into Camp on the Parade Ground during the summer months between academic sessions. New cadets went directly into camp prior to the beginning of the school year.
