Barton (VMI Class of 1856) include a letter dated September 28, 1855 from Charles to his cousin Joseph M. Barton, in which he complains about VMI life and about his instructor Thomas J. John L. Cochran papers

Scope and Contents This collection consists of a report card (1879) from the secondary school John L. Cochran attended before entering VMI, one letter (dated September 4, 1880) from Cochran to his mother, a diary with sketches (1881) that contains short and sporadic entries made while at VMI, and four volumes of class notes (1882-1885) taken while Cochran was a student at Swarthmore College, Pennsylvania and the University of Virginia, with some examples of poetry and sketches interspersed.

Julien Hall cadet poetry notebook

Scope and Contents Poetry notebook compiled by Cadet Julien A. Hall (Virginia Military Institute Class of 1879) in 1875-1876. Such notebooks were popular among cadets of the mid to late 19th century. Robert Beverley notebooks

Scope and Contents This collection consists of two poetry notebooks compiled by VMI cadet Robert Beverley during the period of 1874 to 1875. The volumes contain original poetry composed by VMI cadets, as well as copied verses. Cadet authors include Smith Caruthers (Class of 1875), Samuel M. Cooper (Class of 1876), Selby Jones (Class of 1864), and Charles D. Walker (Class of 1869). The notebooks also contain poetry by faculty member Robert L. Madison. An index is located in front of volume one.

Scope and Contents The collection contains three manuscript notebooks containing verse letters, poetry, notes, and a few newspaper clippings, bulk 1861-1865. One of the volumes is titled "Order Book, 9th Regiment Va. Scope and Contents This collection contains two items dating from Spencer L. Carter's VMI cadetship. Included is a notebook (binding missing) compiled by Carter, concerning VMI football and baseball. It includes lists of teams, game scores, and plays. The collection also contains an annotated copy of "The VMI Scrapbook," a compilation of cadet poetry and prose published in 1891. Carter added notes concerning the VMI Class of 1893, cadet officers, and Kappa Alpha Fraternity members.
